About Theatre 62
A community theatre bringing people together through the art of performance since 1962.
Our History
Theatre 62 was formed in 1962 from the merger of the West Wickham Dramatic Society (first performance in 1934) and the Actories. After a decade of performing in public halls, we acquired our current building in 1972—a former rugby club pavilion that members painstakingly converted into a theatre.
Through dedication and member investment, we've continually improved our home. Members secured loans against their own houses to buy out the rugby club's lease, hand-built the original stage and seating, and in 2003 completed a self-funded £45,000 extension to create proper rehearsal and storage facilities.
Key milestones:
- 1962 - Theatre 62 founded
- 1972 - Moved to current premises (first production: It's Opening Time)
- 1997 - Became Wickham Theatre Trust (registered charity and limited company)
- 2003 - Extension opened by the Mayor of Bromley
- 2012 - Celebrated 50th anniversary
- 2022 - Celebrated 60th anniversary
We survived the 18-month Covid-19 closure (2020-2021) through member dedication, emerging stronger with upgraded facilities
Our Mission & Values
Member-Owned, Member-Built
Theatre 62 is ours. Members built it, members improve it, members run it. This spirit of ownership and teamwork defines us.
Excellence Through Collaboration
From actors to technical crew, prop makers to front-of-house volunteers, every member contributes to creating memorable theatrical experiences.
Innovation in Intimate Spaces
Our flexible venue allows directors to reimagine staging for each production, keeping our work fresh and dynamic.
Community at Our Core
We're more than a theatre company; we're a welcoming community for anyone passionate about live performance, whether on stage or behind the scenes.
Continuous Improvement
For over 60 years, we've adapted and grown while maintaining our commitment to producing five diverse shows annually.
Our Venue
Theatre 62 - Wickham Theatre Centre is an intimate 80-seat studio theatre located at Corkscrew Hill in West Wickham, south-east London.
